Care Home Passes CQC Inspection with Flying Colours Thanks to Responsible Medication Management

Blackpool-based care home Honeysuckle House received special praise for its use of the innovative monitored dosage system (MDS) Biodose®, in a recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, under the tougher care standards introduced late last year.
The Biodose system, designed by Protomed, provides a solution to combat the problem of medicine misdosage, highlighted by a recent drug error study carried out by the British Medical Journal. The study revealed that carers are four times more likely to give the wrong dosage when administering liquid medicines over tablets, with error twice as likely when drugs are taken straight from the manufacturers packaging rather than a monitored dosage system. As the only MDS that accommodates liquid medicines alongside tablets and creams in pre-sealed and labelled pods, Biodose represents an innovative and economical compliance solution for care homes and domiciliary carers.
“As well as cutting round times significantly and making drug administration more straightforward, Biodose gives our residents a degree of independence, as they are able to take their prescriptions themselves,” says Charity Ashcroft, Care Home Manager of Honeysuckle House.
“Since we adopted Biodose five months ago, we’ve had fantastic feedback from the CQC board, carers, residents and their families. It’s really added an extra layer of safety and accuracy to the quality of care we provide our residents, plus, when residents are taken out for the day, families can now take medicines with them and administer them safely.”
“The tightening of CQC regulations means that compliance in care homes is now the greatest indicator of quality, and rightly so,” says Norman Niven, CEO of Protomed. “Honeysuckle House is a prime example of a care home choosing to set itself apart from competitors by adopting the technology that helps them do the job more safely, efficiently and economically.”
